What type of wax do you use?
We use both ‘strip’ and ‘hot’ wax – hot wax for sensitive areas such as the face, underarm and bikini line; and strip wax for larger, more supported body areas such as the chest, back, legs and arms. Both the hot and strip waxes we use are made in Brisbane by Lycon. Jen used to work for Lycon and is an advocate of their products – they are made from the finest resins, natural ingredients and aromatherapy oils. These locally produced waxes are renowned globally for their superior performance, removing stubborn hair as short as 1mm. Lycon white waxes are extremely pliable and have an amazingly low heating temperature, ensuring your waxing experience is as comfortable as possible.
What should I do after being waxed?
We apply antibacterial tea tree lotion or soothing aloe vera gel after all our waxing treatments to calm and protect the skin. This normally calms the skin sufficiently and the skin will be ready for your normal moisturising routine. If, however, you experience some discomfort after the treatment (for example, when you get home), apply a light moisturiser to the area. Aloe vera is great to soothe the skin (it’s great for sunburn too).
What are the advantages of waxing over shaving?
Waxing removes the hair follicle located within the dermas of the skin from the root, and it can take up to three months before the new hair comes through – the tip of the regrowing hair is fine and pointed and is therefore less ‘intrusive’. Shaving, on the other hand, cuts across the hair just above the surface of the skin – the regrowth is ‘blunt’ and detectable shortly after shaving. For this reason, waxing keeps your skin feeling smoother for longer.
Shaving can also produce ingrown hairs which can become extremely uncomfortable, and may also cause shaving ‘bumps’. There is also evidence suggesting that repeated waxing will, over time, damage the hair follicle enough to reduce the strength of hair growth.
Does body hair grow at the same rate?
The short answer is ‘no’. Body hair grows from its own follicle in the skin and at last count, each of us have around 5 million hair follicles over our body. Different hairs grow at different rates. The scalp hair grows fastest, leg hair grows at a slightly slower rate – about .3 of a millimetre each day, and eyebrows grow slower than that.
What should I do in preparation for a waxing appointment?
Firstly, you should relax. When we are tense, the pores of the skin contract, and this includes the pores around the hair follicles. When we tense up, we often also perspire and moisture on the skin doesn’t help the wax ‘stick’. So the best thing you can do is relax! We are professionals here at Bare Therapies – we use techniques to make waxing easy and simple. Obviously, arriving at the salon with clean and dry skin -without creamy or oily moisturisers -would be great too.
What is kinesiology?
Definitions of kinesiology often refer to the scientific study of human movement as the term is derived from the Greek word ‘kinesis’ which means movement. It is a fascinating field and there are various types and applications of kinesiology. The kinesiology techniques we use at Bare Therapies are linked with Eastern or Chinese medicine philosophies – with its ‘meridians’ and various acupressure points’. By evaluating and balancing the body’s energy systems, we can ‘free up’ the body’s energy pathways using various non invasive, techniques, to re-establish harmonious body function.
How do you combine kinesiology with beauty therapy?
Kinesiology has a broad range of applications, but uses a form of muscle resistance testing which can be used to identify what is going on inside the body. Muscle testing can indicate through the body’s meridians, and various points along the meridians can be manipulated to restore balance to the body. We use the principles that underpin kinesiology, and apply these to beauty therapy treatments (massage, for example).
What is Chi?
Chi can be described as the circulating life energy that, in Chinese philosophy, is thought to be inherent in all things. It is the universal ‘life force’. In traditional Chinese medicine chi energy circulates through pathways called meridians. In our Bare Therapy treatments, we are always mindful of ‘chi’ and in some of our treatments, we tap into the body’s meridians and associated pressure points. Our respect for ‘chi’ underpins our mission – to help you feel great in your bare skin, naturally – and links to our holistic approach of ‘beauty, body, balance’.
How does an oxygen facial work?
Oxygen facials are a relatively new phenomenon that has recently been promoted by celebrities, including Madonna who has a number of Intraceuticals Infusion oxygen machines and her own oxygen ‘facialist’ who travels with her. There are a number of oxygen facial techniques available. We use the Intraceuticals Infusion system (the one Madonna uses!) which supplies therapeutic grade oxygen under hyperbaric pressure to infuse specially developed serums into the deep layers of the dermas. The oxygen facial is a four-step process, but in broad terms, specially designed serums are sprayed onto the skin through an ‘infuser’ which is then applied lightly to the skin in brushing motions. The pressurised oxygen generates an oxygen ‘pressure bubble’ which increases the saturation of the external skin tissue and assists in rapid absorption of the serum. In just one 50 minute treatment your skin will look and feel years younger, smoother, clarified, nourished and hydrated. The appearance of fine lines and blemishes is visibly reduced for skin that looks and feels rejuvenated, radiant and fresh.
Is an oxygen facial OK on sensitive skin?
Intraceuticals Infusions and skin care products are designed for all skin types. Particular treatments and products have been designed to meet the needs of specific skin problems, and we will undertake a skin analysis prior to any treatment to ensure the treatment is right for you. The Intraceuticals Infusion is a non-invasive facial that calms, soothes, rejuvenates and improves the application of make up for a glowing and flawless complexion.
